Pet Preventative Care for Your Puppy and Kitten
1. Vaccinate your pet. Pet vaccinations protect young pets from highly contagious illnesses, including distemper, parvo and rabies. The puppy and kitten shot series will keep new pets protected until their immune systems are fully mature. After the shot series is complete, we recommend regular boosters to maintain protection throughout your pet’s life. Our vet will make specific recommendations based on you pet’s lifestyle and wellness needs.
What is Your Dog Telling You?
When you think of an aggressive or happy dog, you usually have a preconceived notion of what this type of dog looks like. However, a dog that wags his tail is not always friendly. A dog that growls is not always offensively aggressive. It’s very important to understand what different body postures mean, and could help to avoid a fight!
When the following are partnered with a stiff wagging tail, it may mean the dog is fearful or nervous.
Keeping Pet Rabbits and Guinea Pigs Healthy
Rabbits and guinea pigs can make great family pets. They are social creatures and have funny, unique personalities. They can be great for someone who may be allergic to dogs or cats. But rabbits and guinea pigs require some special care that many may not be aware of.
Disaster Preparedness Part three of three
Step Six: Geographic and Climatic Considerations
Do you live in an area that is prone to certain natural catastrophes, such as tornadoes, earthquakes or floods? If so, you should plan accordingly.
• Determine well in advance which rooms offer safe havens. These rooms should be clear of hazards such as windows, flying debris, etc.
What Does Your Rabbit Eat? Take Two!
In our last installment, we talked about the basis of a rabbit’s diet, fresh water and hay. In this second half of the article, we will address pellets and fresh produce. Bon appetite!
Pellets – Adult rabbit should be fed fresh, properly stored (and not expired) grass hay pellets such as timothy hay pellets. Pellets should be stored in a sealed container away from light and heat.
Every Four to Six Weeks?
Seriously? You are suggesting that we pay to have a pet that self-cleans, groomed every four to six weeks?
As I have said before, cats do not clean they lick. They cover their fur with saliva and other debris. The fur that cats remove ends up in their stomachs, eventually going out one end or the other. While this is not a pretty sight, it reinforces the benefits of regular grooming for your kitty’s heath.
Has Your Vet Seen Your Cat Lately?
Cats are now our nation’s most popular pet but dogs visit their veterinarian three times as often! Many cats go several years between veterinary visits, only coming in when “something’s wrong.”
It’s true that dogs seem to get into more trouble, getting into the garbage or fighting, the list goes on. Outdoor cats are more prone to abscesses and trauma, but what about cats that stay strictly indoors?
Senior Pet Care
We at Valencia Veterinary Center believe that caring for your senior pet is essential to keep them happy and healthy through their Golden Years. Every pet is considered a “senior” after the age of seven years of age. There are five important steps to help you care for your senior pet:
House Calls
For most pets, going to the vet’s office is a normal and common occurrence throughout their life. Most pets are used to traveling in cars and coming in to the office with minimal stress or anxiety. However, some pets, because of their age, physical status (health), anxiety, etc., are unable to be brought in.
Volunteers and Homeless Dogs to Get Locked Up at Day In Their Paws
She’s not a criminal, yet every year, Vanessa Visket finds herself locked up…with a homeless dog, that is.
Visket is one of more than a dozen volunteers raising funds for Day In Their Paws, The Brittany Foundation’s 5th annual fundraiser on October 19.
Not the Couch!
Cats are born with the natural urge to scratch! Felines scratch items to mark their territory, to remove the dead sheath from their claws, to play, to show dominance, while stretching, and for self-defense. When cats scratch items, they leave their scent behind to notify other felines that this territory belongs to them.
Dog Park Safety
Dog parks are excellent for socialization! However, sometimes it can be a bad experience. By following these rules, you’ll ensure a great time for you and your dog.
Before you take your dog to the park, become familiar with the area and the designated spots for small and big dogs.
Inappropriate Urination In Dogs and Cats
Inappropriate urination problems can be very frustrating and concerning to pet owners. Before coming to the conclusion that your pet is acting out or mad at you, let’s discuss some other reasons why this may be occurring.
Stem Cell Therapy for Pets An Introduction
Stem cell therapy for animals has been commercially available to veterinarians since 2004. Adult Stem Cells can be found dormant in tissues such as fat, skin, blood vessels, nerves, liver and bone marrow. However, adult stem cells are most abundant in adipose (fat) tissue and have the ability to differentiate into other cell types such as cartilage, bone, nerve, tendon, ligaments and muscle.
Halloween Pet Safety Tips
For many of us, Halloween can be a ghostly good time. Candy, costumes and frights in the night can be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, our pets don’t necessarily agree. For them it can be a stressful night that causes anxiety.
Orthopedic Conditions
Many orthopedic conditions affect pets, and most can be fixed in one or more ways. It might be a simple fracture that requires internal or external fixation. The same is true of conditions affecting the joints, where damage to the cartilage may lead to osteoarthritis and the inability to walk properly or to exercise.
What Does Your Rabbit Eat?
We have learned a lot in recent years about how to improve the diets of our household rabbits. Rabbits are herbivores that are designed to eat a diet high in roughages (high fiber grasses and hay), with a very limited (to minimal) amount of simple sugars or starches. Rabbit husbandry (the care and keeping of rabbits, if you will) has specific and unique needs that must be met in order for them to be healthy and happy.
