With Your Family in Mind
Planning for Your Pet’s Welfare
What happens to your pet if you become incapacitated or die? We have seen many beloved pets abandoned or taken to the animal shelter because an owner has failed to include provisions for the care of their animals in their estate planning documents.
$10,000 Grant to SCV Disaster Coalition
Time Warner Cable and the Cable Hope Fund presented a check for $10,000 to the Santa Clarita Valley Disaster Coalition at the Santa Clarita City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. The donation supports the on-going assistance efforts for Santa Clarita Valley families impacted by the October 2007 wildfires.
Who will Watchover Your Kids?
If you and your spouse pass away leaving minor children, have you selected someone to serve as their guardian? Have you chosen someone to manage the finances for their future? These decisions can be made during the estate planning process, a process that employs legal tools designed to protect you and your family. Even if you have a living trust already in place, you still need a will that designates, among other things, guardians for your children.
The Paradox of Goal Setting
So you have goals. Maybe you write them down or just begin working on them. You see results, or you don’t. Some goals are simple to state such as “I’m going to lose 10 pounds.” Some goals are more complex like “I will become happier this year.” When we set goals, there is a method to making them goals of the heart, goals that really matter to us. We can spend our whole lives on goals that don’t really bring us joy, don’t really matter to our overall wellbeing.
Returning to Work and Looking for Infant Care?
Today, most families include not just one working parent, but two. So when a new baby joins the family, working parents struggle to find childcare for their infants.

Should I Consider Claiming My Parent As A Dependent?
As many Santa Clarita Residents are in the process of compiling information for their tax returns, this is the month for parents and children to discuss the dependency exemption. Many adult children are caring for parents who have diminished income and need the resources supplied by their children in order to sustain their lifestyles.
Children’s Bureau Seeking Families to Nurture At-Risk Children in Foster and Adoptive Program
With nearly 70,000 children removed from their parents’ homes due to abuse or neglect, there is a great need for caring adults to provide loving, nurturing homes as either foster or adoptive parents. A parent information meeting will be held Thursday night, January 24th from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church located at 27265 Luther Drive, Canyon Country, for those interested. Adults single or married are welcome and we offer English and Bilingual Spanish speaking help.
Will the Court go as far as Awarding Visitation to a Non-Parent?
If you thought that the only person who could seek orders for visitation with your children during your divorce is your ex-spouse, you’re not alone with this mistaken belief. When grandparents or step-parents begin asserting rights to have continuing contact with your children, you may find yourself being bound by some unfavorable orders.
Make 2008 Resolutions Stick
The beginning of a new year for most of us means turning over a new leaf or taking action in some area of our life that needs changing. The top five financial goals that are usually set each year are: save more money, invest smarter, cut taxes*, get out of debt and get a better job.
Annuity Fraud: A Multi-Billion Dollar Industry
I recently attended a meeting of the Southern California Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. The topic involved annuities and how the state of California is trying to stop the sales and marketing of improper and financially devastating annuities to seniors and the elderly. The problem has reached epidemic proportions. The sale of annuities to seniors and the elderly exceeds $200 billion per year!
Ask the Voicecat- January 2008
I’m always getting terrific questions from Santa Clarita Magazine readers about the voice-acting business. Here’s one regarding voice-over demos, which I’ll answer (because there’s a lot to this question) over the next few months:
After You Die, Uncle Sam Wants His Share
There’s been talk on Capital Hill again about estate taxes. Once again, there appears to be no movement on the horizon. It looks as though we are going to have to wait until the election of 2008 before Congress does anything about the estate tax issue.
Mortage Meltdown:What is Washington doing to help Borrowers keep their homes?
Millions of Americans bought homes during the last few years with loans that offered very low “teaser” adjustable interest rates that have or will adjust to higher rates that the borrower cannot afford. If refinancing is not an option, most likely because the property values...
Steps to Take in Advance of Disability or Death
Although none of us wants to contemplate a time when we or a loved one might become disabled or die, it is important to be prepared. There are many steps families can take in advance of death or disability to avoid future conflicts or uncertainties:
Stress and School
Childhood should be a time of growing, learning, fun and friends. At least that’s what we experienced growing up. However, in this day and age, expectations for children and adolescents are to excel and prepare for the future. As the grade level expectancies increase, students of all ages are faced with stress in school that many of their parents never experienced.
Adopted Children Not At Risk For Low Self-Esteem
A significant new study released by American Psychological Association, focused on adoption and self-esteem, has found that there are no differences in self-esteem between adopted and non-adopted children and no differences in self-esteem between transracial and same-race adopted children.
How to Make Managing your Insurance Easier and Save Money at the Same Time
Whether it’s for your business or personal life, or a combination of both, the answer to simplifying the management of your insurance policies and saving money is far from complicated. All you need to do is find one agent who is trustworthy and knowledgeable, and provides great service.
