Dear Designer,
My name is Mary and I just recently moved to a new home in Westridge.  My new home needs everything from window treatments and furniture to paint on the walls.  I am so afraid of making a huge mistake in my decorating choices and I don’t want to be limited to one particular style.  I find that I like change every few years.  What should I do?

Help, Mary

Dear Mary,
Your questions and concerns are very typical.  My advice to you would be to start with a neutral color palette on all material choices.  Material choices include all flooring, counter tops, cabinets, built-ins, carpeting and moldings.  This will make change easier in the future.  Don’t be afraid to use rich, bold colors on the wall.  Paint is the most inexpensive way to change the look and feel of a room.  If you get sick of it, just paint over it.  When choosing case pieces don’t try to match wood colors and finishes.  Find pieces that work together because of style, lines and color tones.  Matching will get boring!  Use solids and stripes on upholstery pieces while keeping a neutral color palette.  Use pattern and color on accent pillows, throws and small accessories.  This will enable you to switch them out later inexpensively and quickly.  Use the same rules for window treatments.  Keep them neutral.  Keeping the windows neutral also beautifies and unifies the home both on the inside and outside.

Following these simple rules will make change easy and your choices will be timeless.  Another perk is resale because a home decorated in neutral is always easier to sell.  Buyers can easily visualize their furniture in the space and it makes the home feel more open and spacious.
