God vision? Got vision? Or is it both? Got God vision? Some of us don’t even bother to ask the questions and that can be detrimental on two levels. First, a life lived without vision is destructive. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Without vision, the people perish”. Other translations suggest “people are unrestrained”. The idea is simple, human beings were created for a life bigger and more significant than we can imagine and a purpose larger than ourselves.
If we don’t “get a vision” for our lives, we tend, at best, to drift into self-centeredness, or simply begin to serve purposes lesser, at worst, even darker than we should. Compare the lives and ending of Gerald Ford with Saddam Hussein. Both recently finished their races in life and ended up in very different places. If you think about it, both were informed by very different yet very distinct “visions” for life. Ford’s vision was providentially inspired and life bringing, Saddam’s was clearly dark, denial-filled and terribly destructive. One man died being loved and honored by the greatest in history, the other taunted and alone, the bitter end of an executioner’s rope his only comfort.
Obviously there is a difference between just our good ideas and God’s ideas for our own self-generated vision for our future and a true God-given vision granted to us for our life. True God-given vision makes a difference in our lives. The Bible tells us through countless examples of people who lived seeking God that true God-given vision is better for life than simply our own self-generated vision because it comes from the source of life. This is logical. If God is the Creator of all life, than as the ultimate author, he knows best how our life story should be written. Shouldn’t we seek him for our story?
It’s bigger than ours and requires we seek God. True God-given vision is always bigger for us and our life than we could ever come up with on our own and invites us to trust God to help us live it out. This is a good thing. It fulfills us more completely.
God’s vision includes more fulfillment for us than we give him credit for. How many of us have followed our own agenda only to find it leaving us empty? It transforms us in the process.
We need growth and change by following true God-given vision. It always changes us from the inside out and keeps us maturing even as we’re moving toward the goal. Its focused on others, not just us. God’s vision for our lives always has a primary beneficial by-product for others. It’s not just about us getting all we can get out of life. What a relief. It has eternal significance.
Following out God’s vision for our lives always leaves a lasting legacy of good. One way or another, true God-given vision always gets completed. God’s plans always have and always will get done. Don’t you want to see your own life’s purpose fulfilled and the end of your story come to a full and excellent conclusion?
My advice: Get some God-inspired vision for your life and start seeing the possibilities of your life’s significance as bigger, better and broader than you have ever conceived of before.
