With nearly 1000 Santa Clarita families receiving food assistance last year, a 14 percent increase over the previous year, children at area schools are doing their part to pitch in. Students at Pinecrest Schools participated in a Hunger Defense Fund food drive with the theme being Love and Compassion.

Hunger Defense Fund has been serving the SCV since 2002 collecting and distributing food, as well as personal hygiene items such as soap, shampoo and toothpaste plus clothing and shoes.  Set up like a grocery store, recipients shop for and select the items themselves to fit their needs.

Thanks to the support of Pinecrest Schools, including the Junior Kindergarten and 4-year-olds classes, more than 100 items were collected for the food bank and as part of their 100 days of school project, signifying their 100th day of school in session and a project for mastering their counting skills.

”Pinecrest schools encourage their students to be involved in their community and service projects for others,” says Preschool Director, Cheri Mee.

The “Love and Compassion” project served to teach students the virtues of the project’s title by helping the less fortunate.
The Fund receives no government assistance and operates solely on donations from the community with 99 cents of every dollar being spent directly on food programs.
