Over 55? Get a Free Ride
City officials approved the FREEdom for Seniors program in September of last year.  This year they are looking to extend the program for six months and expand it to include people with disabilities.  The program is aimed at encouraging seniors to ride the local fixed bus routes instead of using Santa Clarita’s Dial-A-Ride program.  Senior ridership has increased on local buses 258 percent in the three-month trial period to date.

One Sunday each month the Unitarian Universalist Church of Santa Clarita Valley donates the congregation’s collection plate money to a charity.  Last month the Blue Star Mothers of America were the lucky recipients.  The monies donated will be used to support the constant stream of care packages sent overseas to the various troops.

Valencia Viking Builds a Brick Wall
Brooke Gauvin isn’t doing charity work, nor is she helping in the backyard.  She has built a sturdy brick wall against opposing teams for the Valencia Vikings Girls Soccer Team.  Just five goals have passed Gauvin in the last four league games.  All were earned, according to head coach Sean O’Connell and he has no problem with that.  Gauvin is a textbook goalkeeper and anyone who scores off her should be extremely proud.

Can Twins Sense One Another Thousands of Miles Away
Thousands of miles from the safe valley of Santa Clarita two residents, who are twin brothers, found one another in a world of sand.  After a few years apart due to various tours of duty for the United States Military, Kimberlin and Chris Bain were reunited on patrol.  The brothers were given the day off to spend with one another and both cherished the day greatly.

A Realtor and a Trashman, And It’s Not a Corny Joke
The SCV Chamber of Commerce announced the new Board of Directors at the Chamber’s 84th Annual Installation Dinner.  Chairmanship was passed from Chris Fall, owner of Advantage Disposal, to Pam Ingram of Re/Max.  One point Ingram plans to address is developing stronger relationships with the chambers in Acton and Castaic, making permitting easier for small businesses.

This Could be the Beginning of a Beautiful Career
Two students in Kim LePage’s third-grade Marathon Club might have found their purpose in life.  Austin Rice and Aaron Azodi, both eight years old, completed their goal of running a whopping 26.2 miles.  LePage started the Marathon Club in October as a challenge for her students to show that some goals, told to be impossible, can be achieved with hard work and persistence.  The club is about more than just running though.  Students have learned camaraderie, encouragement and even some basic math skills.

Assemblyman Smyth makes Santa Clarita Proud
Assemblyman Cameron Smyth has been appointed to two additional committees in the California State Assembly.  Smyth is adding the Utilities and Commerce as well as the Local Government Committee to his roster.  Utilities and Commerce deals with public utilities, energy and telephone companies as well as cable television providers.  The Local Government Committee works on special taxes, city and county organization and powers, subdivisions and administrative issues of special districts.

Santa Clarita Valley joins the Honor Band
Thanks to Lance Cardey and Deanna Martinez, both eighth-graders from Placerita Junior High, the Santa Clarita Valley is now represented in the All Southern California Middle School Honor Bands, a feat that no other Placerita student has ever achieved.  The honor was not bestowed on a whim.  Both students practiced up to 3 hours additionally each day.  Not only are they amazing musicians, but they have extreme dedication and pride in their work that shows through in everything they do.

Teachers Aren’t the Only Ones Shaping Young Lives
The COC admissions and records department is constantly bettering themselves so they may attend to the needs of the more than 17,000 students.  When someone walks through the door, their office has the potential to change that student’s life in some way.  These administrators often play a dual role, as they must do their best to enforce regulations and serve the students to the best of their ability.

Canyon High May Have a Brother or Sister Coming Soon
The William S. Hart District is preparing itself to birth another High School located in the eastern part of Canyon Country.  The district is working with the Facilities Foundation to secure the land for a future High School.  Owning the land first gives the district the opportunity to cut through the red tape once they are ready to build.

Golf is Giving Back to Santa Clarita Businesses
With the anticipation of the AT&T Champions Classic, held March 16 through 18, 2007 the golf enthusiasts and local businesses are chomping at the bit.  Last year the Classic brought in $19.2 million, $8.3 million of that directly impacting Santa Clarita Valley.  From local hotels to restaurants, all of Santa Clarita is looking forward to many more years of a great partnership to come.

10 Bucks To a Better Future
That’s the theme for the Annual Campaign for the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center Committee on Aging.  $655 has been raised to date, courtesy of a luncheon catered by Elizabeth Coffee of Pasadena; a great start according to Robin Clough, a volunteer for the senior center.  The center is looking forward to the support of its residents, so get out there Santa Clarita and support our local senior center.

A $10,000 Phone Call Could Change a Residents Life
Supervisor Antonovich has extended two $10,000 reward motions for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the hate crimes committed in the Santa Clarita Valley on Saturday, November 4, 2006.  A local Jewish family’s car was vandalized as well as a Master’s College putting green.  Residents are encouraged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective Keeling of the Hate Crime Task Force at 310-628-2370 with any information.

Volunteers Shape up the Placerita Trails
Placerita Canyon includes seven trails that span 12 miles as well as three campgrounds and a picnic area.  Keeping it clean, safe and people-friendly is a job for the masses.  Thanks to many volunteers in Santa Clarita, the Canyon received a well-needed facelift to keep the trails clear from poison oak and many other dangers that are presented in nature.

LAX or Palmdale, Is it Really a Question?
Los Angeles World Airports, the airport agency that runs LAX, Palmdale Regional, Van Nuys and Ontario International airports is once again utilizing the Palmdale Regional Airport to provide travel to the Bay area.  Terms are being negotiated to include air service with 50-seat jets and multiple runs.

Character Counts in Santa Clarita
Bridgeport Elementary students were treated with a little music to help liven up the events at the Character Counts program.  The program stands on six pillars on trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.  Students were treated to various skits that focused on taking pride in the community, showing respect to all and making Santa Clarita a better place.  What a great way to help future generations preserve the way of life in the Valley.
