Some of the more serious accident cases that I have received occurred during the colder months.  So, what accounts for this, and what can we do to prevent ourselves from being a victim in an automobile accident during this time period? First of all, most of the accidents during this time of year occur due to rainy weather conditions, and associated with that, failure to properly maintain one’s vehicle.  Another major cause for accidents this time of year is drinking and driving.

With regard to weather-related accidents, we find that these accidents occur due to driving too fast for the road conditions.  If it is raining outside, give yourself a little extra time to get to your destination.  Keep more distance between your car and the car in front of you.  Be more aware of your surroundings and how vehicles are acting and reacting around you.  If you are driving on the freeway during rain, avoid driving in the fast lane as much as possible.  Flooding tends to take place near the fast lane, and over spray from the opposing traffic is also increased.

Another cause of weather-related accidents is due to improper maintenance of a vehicle.  If tires have little or no tread left on them, there is no traction and hydroplaning becomes an imminent risk.  This is the cause for most spin out accidents.  Brakes, which are not in proper working order, are also a significant cause of accidents during the rainy months.  Vehicles stalling may also occur during heavy flooding.  It is therefore critical during this time of year to have your tires and brakes checked by a specialist.  Also, your windshield wipers should be in perfect running condition and should be changed approximately every two years.

The other more unfortunate reason for automobile accidents during this time of year is due to drinking and driving.  We all know, of course, that drinking and driving is not just illegal, but is extraordinarily dangerous and deadly.  We must use common sense when drinking.  If you know that you are going to be driving following an event, do not drink at all or limit your alcohol intake.  Always eat and drink plenty of water while drinking alcohol, and by all means do not be embarrassed to call a taxi or impose on a friend to help you get to your destination.  Without question, even a small amount of alcohol in your system can slow down your reaction time, which impairs your judgment and driving abilities.
