Central Park Receives an Acknowledgement for Excellence
The Youth Grove located in Santa Clarita’s Central Park has been awarded the highest possible acknowledgment for excellence. The memorial dedicated to Santa Clarita youth who have died in traffic-related incidents currently includes 67 names. The California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference bestowed the honor to Youth Grove and 37 other entries, out of nearly 300 applicants statewide.
Re-Claiming the Glory of the Val Verde Park
Residents of Val Verde can look forward to seeing changes in their community. The Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a more than 10,000 square foot lot near the entrance of the park. The addition comes after a renovation including a new football field, basketball and tennis courts, restrooms, landscaping and a new playground.
A Healthy Lifestyle starts at Home and at School
Bridgeport Elementary School believes that a healthy lifestyle begins at home as well as at school. Students participated in a plethora of health-minded assemblies, games and physical activities to embrace a district-wide health event. They earned raffle tickets by exhibiting health choices including eating healthy snacks and participating in physical activities. Students learned the basics for a fit, healthy and energetic lifestyle.
Castaic Middle School Celebrates History Day L.A.
Castaic Middle School students participated in the History Day L.A. regional historical project with one student going on the state level. Eighth grader Eugene Luzong’s research project on the U.S.S Indianapolis battleship included a fold-out board display and a mounted DVD player showcasing interviews obtained from survivors of the July 1945 Japanese submarine attack that sunk the battleship.
West Ranch’s Wildcats Gave Hart High Something to Remember
The girls of West Ranch’s softball team gave Hart high something to remember when they defeated the 10-0 team. Wildcats pitcher Melissa Herndon pitched a complete game allowing only 4 hits and third baseman Breanna Lendman wowed spectators by driving in all four runs for the team. What a powerhouse West Ranch is cooking up. Fans can look forward to yet another exciting softball season.
Art, Theatre, Design…Oh My
City officials are excited about looking into developing the proposed Arts and Theater district for downtown Newhall. What they envision is a village style area for creative businesses to thrive. Specialty fields like stained glass or hand-blown glass as well as design firms, galleries and photography related stores are many of the potential businesses City officials look forward to. The area currently houses two live theaters and it is envisioned that a movie theater could be a great addition.
Army Sgt. Maj. Elwood Johnson and a Bear Named Sid
Army Sgt. Maj. Elwood Johnson was adopted while he was overseas. Sixth-grade teacher Tina Csiszar and her class adopted Sgt. Maj. Johnson while he spent many months in the extreme conditions of the Afghan war zone. After learning that one of her students had a brother overseas, Csiszar decided to make a difference. With her students, they sent care packages that included a build-a-bear named Sid. Sid was dressed in camoflage and included a digital message that encouraged him to be safe and come home. Sgt. Maj. Johnson showed his gratitude by flying from his current station in North Carolina to share photos, stories and present the class with an American Flag that he flew over his camp on Veterans Day.
Assemblyman Smyth Backs Former NYC Mayor Giuliani
Exact roles are being worked out, but Assemblyman Cameron Smyth knows that his focus will be on the Los Angeles area. Smyth feels that the most pressing issue for the 2008 election is the security of our nation and he believes that former Mayor Giuliani has clearly demonstrated that he is the best person to lead us forward. Smyth is joined by a group of Californians that include Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Don Knabe and Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, (R)-Antelope Valley.
