“Alvin Ailey liked for dancers to dance from the inside out and bring their whole being to the performance,” said Sylvia Waters, Artistic Director of the Ailey II dancers, a troop who performed recently at the College of the Canyons.  Waters, while speaking to The Magazine of Santa Clarita knows first-hand about what it takes to live the life of an Ailey dancer.  She toured the world with the dance troop as a principal dancer in the late 60s and early 70s.

“Alvin was a genius in his vision, extraordinary as an artist and a person.  He was well-read and very warm,” said Waters about Ailey, who died in 1989.
Nevertheless, his vision as a dance company director and choreographer was still strongly felt as the troop took the COC stage in his Revelations piece, created in 1960.  Ailey’s choreographical masterpiece is based on his experience growing up as an African American in the South.  It certainly was colorful, lively and the audience went crazy over it honoring the performance with a standing ovation.  The strong technique and commitment to precise and heartfelt dancing took over the stage and transported the audience back to a story-telling kind of performance.  It is truly amazing how the choreography of Ailey has stood the test of time.  It’s a distinct signature style just as strong as that of dance choreography genius, Bob Fosse.
Ailey was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor in 1988.

Under Waters direction, Ailey II has become one of the most popular dance companies in the country, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach programs.

“Our choreographers and dancers are moving on to wonderful careers after studying and performing with us,” says Waters.

After seeing Ailey II’s recent strong performance of Revelations along with several other challenging pieces, it’s no wonder the performers continue to shine for audiences and have brilliant dance careers.
