Paintings and children…two things in life that offer joy. Now College of the Canyons, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County foster care system, presents The Heart Gallery, an exhibition featuring photographs of children in the Los Angeles County foster care system that are in need of permanent adoptive families.
Its purpose is to help raise awareness of the need to find permanent, loving homes for over 700 children in Los Angeles County.
Most of the children are school-aged, of African American or Latino heritage, may have special needs and may be part of a sibling group. All of these children are beautiful and unique and deserve to grow up in a permanent, safe and loving family.
The Heart Gallery in Los Angeles is one of over 40 Heart Galleries that have been developed throughout the United States to help find permanent adoptive families for waiting children. This is accomplished by working with community partners and volunteer professional photographers to create a roving gallery of photographs that feature these children and capture the beauty and spirit for anyone who has ever considered adopting a child.
On Tuesday, April 17, there will be a reception with refreshments from 6 to 8 p.m. Social workers from the Department of Children and Family Services will be available to answer any questions about adoptions or about making a difference in a child’s life.
The exhibit at COC is free and will run from April 17 through May 1. A parking permit can be obtained from the south lot or lot number 6. This permit allows attendees to park in any regular space in the student lots.
Art gallery and store hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gallery is closed Friday and Sunday and all college holidays.
