A lot of questions have been asked about water softeners in the Santa Clarita Valley. Let’s start with why new installations have been banned in our valley.
Automatic water softener systems discharge chloride into our sewer system, which goes to our wastewater treatment plants and then to the Santa Clara River. Although our wastewater treatment plants remove many impurities, they are not designed to remove chloride. Chloride in the Santa Clara River can potentially damage salt sensitive agricultural crops downstream from the Santa Clarita Valley and harm wildlife. You can help to reduce chloride going into the Santa Clara River by finding an alternative to your salt or potassium automatic water softener. An incentive program offered by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts is coming soon to residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. The program is called New Automatic Water Softener Rebate Program. The rebate will offer 100 percent of the reasonable value of your automatic water softener, and reimburse residents for the reasonable cost of removal and disposal.
