Hearing loss often gets ignored because it occurs gradually over time and goes unnoticed until it becomes an embarrassing condition.  Contributing to this is the fact that hearing tests are not usually included in annual medical checkups.  So since 1927 the month of May has been declared Better Hearing and Speech Month to help raise people’s awareness of the need to regularly check their hearing.

Hearing loss is becoming more common in the United States as younger people lose their hearing due to noise exposure and baby boomer’s rising.  An estimated 28 million Americans have a hearing loss that can be treated.  Because of this, Better Hearing and Speech Month has become important as a means of reaching those who are reluctant to have their hearing tested.

So, as a community service, Audiology Associates have set aside time in May to conduct free hearing screenings, by appointment, for local Santa Clarita Valley residents over 21-years of age.  Please call us at 661-248-1400 and make an appointment for your screening.

You should especially call for an appointment if you have the following symptoms:

•  Frequently ask people to repeat themselves
•  Often turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better
•  Understand people better when you wear your glasses or look directly at their faces
•  Lose your place in group conversations
•  Keep the volume on your radio or TV at a level that others say is too loud
•  Have pain or ringing in your ears.

If you cannot take advantage of this offer, get a hearing checkup, especially if you are over 45 years of age, at the same time you get your annual medical checkup.  Simply have your physician refer you to a qualified audiologist.  The cost, usually around $150, is covered by most medical plans and insurance.

If you would like to make an appointment for a free hearing screening or want information about hearing aids, contact Nola Aronson, M.A., or Patrice Rifkind, Au.D. or Ginny Newman, Au.D. at Audiology Associates 661-288-1400.
