Spring is upon us.  As the weather begins to warm up, our thoughts begin to turn to what the great outdoors holds for us.  April is a great month for enjoying all our City has to offer; learning how to be prepared and taking in local cultural events in Santa Clarita.  This spring, there is a wide array of programs available to you and your family.

The City’s Annual Emergency Expo will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the College of the Canyons from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This is a great opportunity to learn how you and your family can be prepared in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.  A bicycle safety rodeo, a kid passport scavenger hunt, free fingerprinting for kids, preparedness bingo, search and rescue demonstrations and Smokey the Bear await you at this great annual event.  For more information, call the City at 661-255-4965.

Local businesses, large and small, should plan to attend a special Business Watch program being sponsored by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, the City of Santa Clarita and the Sheriffs Department on Wednesday, April 25, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Chamber office, 28460 Avenue Stanford #100.  The Business Watch program includes a free lunch and great information about how to keep your business safe.  For more information and to reserve your space, call Sgt. Gregg Lewison at the Sheriffs Station at 661-255-1121.

April is also the time of year for the City’s Annual Cowboy Festival, slated for April 25-29.  This year, you will enjoy a host of great entertainers, the cowboy gear show and the best peach cobbler this side of the Mississippi.  Tickets are still available for the weekend at Melody Ranch as well as the many partner events offered, including the cowboy fashion show, the family murder mystery dinner train, the swing dance with the Lucky Stars and Walk of Western Stars dinner.  You may log on to www.cowboyfestival.org or call the City directly at 661-286-4021.

Finally, one of my favorite events, the City’s Annual Arbor Day, will be held on Saturday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Central Park.   Every year, the City plants over 1,000 trees that help provide shade and a much-needed urban forest.  Arbor Day is a wonderful celebration of trees and includes a special tree giveaway, tree education and lots of fun.  For more information, contact the City at 661-294-2567.

I hope you’ll be able to participate in one or all of these upcoming events aimed at encouraging you to enjoy all that Santa Clarita has to offer.
