A group of at-risk kids recently visited The Gentle Barn for the Peace Enhancement Program. The children were excited about being with the animals, except one boy named Billy. He looked so defensive. You could almost see the anger oozing out of him.
When they talked about Bonsai, the miniature horse, who had been beaten by an alcoholic, Billy wanted the story told again. Then he ran over to the horse, hugged him and kept repeating, “It’s gonna to be O.K.”
It turns out Billy’s first years of life were spent with an alcoholic stepfather who beat him and his mom daily.
Bonsai and Billy spent the next ten months together at The Gentle Barn learning to trust again.
The Gentle Barn Foundation is home to sixty animals rescued from abuse. They host abused children, kids recovering from substance abuse, foster kids and special needs children.
Through the interaction with animals, the kids learn forgiveness, courage, strength, leadership skills, trust and kindness. The healing that takes place when the kids get together with the animals is miraculous.
The Gentle Barn thrives with your support, so visit us on Sundays from 10 am – 2 pm at 15825 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, send a donation to 26910 Sierra Highway, D-8 #318, Santa Clarita, 91321 or on line at gentlebarn.org.
