Losing a large amount of weight, whether by proper eating habits and nutrition, exercise or bariatric surgery, has many rewarding benefits.  However, many of those who accomplish significant weight loss may still find that they do not have that tight and fit body that they had wanted to achieve.  Skin may be loose and sagging in various areas such as, the face, breast, tummy, backside, thighs and even the arms.

No matter how much weight one might loose, the skin usually bears the burden. The skin has very limited capacity to retighten.  Once the elasticity of the skin has been compromised due to the stretching and then loss or shrinkage of it’s supporting understructure, the majority of the skin’s integrity is compromised.  The skin then becomes soft, wrinkled and saggy.  Certain individuals skin can even become wet, rashy or infected.  Not only can this be unattractive, but it also can impair one’s health.

Surgical body contouring following major weight loss not only will improve one’s self-esteem, but also will dramatically improve the shape, tone and smoothness of the body and/or face, and skin.  Good candidates generally are those that have stabilized their weight, are non-smokers and don’t have medical conditions that can impair healing.  A positive outlook and realistic goals are just as important to one’s success.

Specific procedures that may be recommended to help achieve and improve one’s image after weight loss are: Facelift, tummy tuck, breast lift, breast reduction, lower body lift, medial thigh lift and brachioplasty arm lift.  All of these surgeries include removing excess skin from the face and/or body.  It is best to discuss with your surgeon what you may expect before, during and after surgery.  Your surgeon might suggest that you stay in an aftercare facility immediately after surgery for one to two nights. If there are multiple areas that you are considering to be treated, ask if it should be done in staged procedures.  The process of healing varies for every individual.  However, one can expect some swelling, numbness, and/or bruising for a few days or weeks post operatively.  This period of healing is a small price to pay for a huge amount of satisfaction.
