The birthplace of our present day 4th of July fireworks, generally originated in China.  It is said that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed three common kitchen ingredients.  The result was colorful flames.  The cook also noticed that if the mixture was burned when enclosed in the hollow of a bamboo shoot, there was a tremendous explosion.

At first this invention was used, mainly, for entertainment, but slowly developed as a use for chasing away evil spirits, to celebrate weddings, victories in battle, eclipse of the moon and religious ceremonies.  From then on, fireworks were used mostly for entertainment and battles.

By the time of the American Revolution, fireworks had long played a part in celebrating important events.  Once the Americans signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, it was natural that not only John Adams, but many of his countrymen, would think of fireworks when independence was declared. The very first celebration of Independence day was in 1777, 6 years before Americans knew whether the new nation would even survive the war.  The American spirit of the 4th of July celebration, continued to grow and fireworks became more popular than ever.  Today, Americans celebrate this day of independence with the same traditions as those centuries before when Britain gave us our freedom.
