Rita Garasi — a long-time community volunteer — was honored by College of the Canyons as the recipient of the coveted Silver Spur Community Service Award for 2007 during recent ceremonies held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City.
The community turned out in full force, taking in the elegant ambience of the famed Sony backlot where Garasi’s life-long passion for making her community a better place to live came to life through photos and shared memories of her friends and colleagues.
“Above all else Rita is a person of character,” Dianne Van Hook, president/superintendent of the Santa Clarita Community College District said. “She adheres to the highest standards of integrity. She is a true original and one of Santa Clarita’s gems. Garasi most recently served as campaign chair for the 2006 “Yes on Measure M” bond campaign that will bring $160 million to the college for capital improvements.
