Continued from last month’s issue, this is the second article in California Pool’s Smart Choices in Pool Building series. This article will extend the initial planning stage to discuss what homeowners can expect during the pool-building process.
The Big Dig
Once the designs have been drawn up and the hardscape selected, construction is set to begin on your dream pool. What exactly does that mean? The pool builder will start by grading and excavating or digging out the site. After the site has been excavated, the next step is installation of reinforcing steel, also know as rebar. Once all of that is complete, the plumbing and electrical work will be performed.
Setting Up
Next, the contoured and supported surfaces will be sprayed with gunite, a concrete-like substance used to add stability. The gunite usually takes about one to two weeks to cure. Once completely cured or dry, the coping and tile will be installed. The masonry work will be done next. This includes installation of all ofthe extras, such as custom walls, rock features, waterfalls, barbeques and fireplaces.
The Final Touches
At this point, your hole in the ground will begin to look more like the pool you originally envisioned. One of the final stages involves completion of the deck. It will take some time to prepare the deck and then about one week to fully install it. Any options such as gates, fences or alarms will also be installed here. Finally, the plaster will be poured into your pool. This should take about one day. Now it is time to call up the family and friends to begin enjoying your backyard haven.
