June was a special month for us, many things happening on our Optimist Club plate as the saying goes.  There were family members graduating, participations in several events in the city, including the Chili Cook off at  the Pitchess Detention center.

I ‘d like to share with you an event, which for our club was a first-time experience, but one that is guaranteed to continue for many years to come.  We were invited to participate in the “Celebrate of Life with Hope affair” sponsored by the Children’s Hospital.  What an outstanding day this was for us to experience and to take part in.
We made hats from brown butcher paper and adorned them with all kinds of stickers, buttons, ribbons and dried flowers.  Each hat was specifically designed to fit the personality.  This event is by invitation only and it is for children and their families and friends.  To have the opportunity to see and speak with some of these children is an experience one will never forget.  I know I won’t.  The event featured many different types of vendors sharing their wares and doing something to make sure that these kids had a day to remember.  The hat-making project is becoming very special to us and we invite you to come over and see us in September at the Kid’s Day event.  We hope to have many new designs of hats for you to wear and display.  Another special day took place on June 24 when our club celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Twenty years ago Optimist International voted to change their bylaws and chose to invite women into the organization.  Our club became the first all-women’s club in the organization and I believe the first of any male-oriented organization.  Three months later, we took in our first male member.  Preparations are underway to have our 20th anniversary along with our annual induction of officers and board of directors.  This will take place on the September 30 at Le Chêne.  Invitations will be going out to many of our past members, whom we hope will attend, so that they can share with us their memories of our club.  What a great experience this has been to be part of such an organization that continues to bring out the best in kids. Until next month, stay cool and always be optimistic.
