As the fall season is upon us a familiar scent attaches to the breeze, there’s a chill in the air and before we know it Halloween is here. A growing holiday who’s appeal is reaching more and more people each year.
Proof of which can be seen in the increase in profits and/or availability of Halloween/Costume shops, movies with Halloween themes released to capitalize on the season and haunted events such as Knott’s Scary Farm or Mickey’s Haunted Treat, along with the many adult Halloween parties thrown allowing us all an opportunity to revisit our childhood fantasies. This growing trend has also driven many people to add their own scare to the community by creating very elaborate to simple interactive displays to scare the local families establishing a name for themselves as home haunters.
What has caused this holiday to become such a passion for the young and old alike? Some would say that it’s an increase in accessibility and who can argue with that. With the emergence of seasonal stores each year there definitely comes a greater availability of all that is Halloween. With thousands of costumes and decorations filling the shelves families with any budget can always find something to make their house feel more festive. Although that’s a large part of it I think there may be more to it.
We live in a world where the time allowed for childhood is getting ever shorter. From a young age we are encouraged to study more than dream, to focus on being successful rather than creative and to keep our heads on our shoulders rather than in the clouds. Good advice when considering the increasingly competitive job market that awaits. Unfortunately something in us gets lost perhaps laying dormant waiting for the right inspiration. So maybe Halloween becomes an opportunity for all to indulge in something we had almost forgotten. To live outside of the everyday constraints we function under and allow ourselves if for only one day to be children again and indulge in a world full of things we had long since ceased having faith in.
Who knows? All that is certain is Halloween is a special holiday celebrated by all ages and loved by many.
