As I sit at my desk thinking about writing this, I’m reminded of just why I started out on my journey to open a dog boutique. It was because of my deep love for dogs. The absolute joy they bring to me when I watch their behavior. The innocence of a puppy when he/she hears something new or watches a leaf move on the ground for the first time. How sweet it is to watch the reaction of that pup as he/she catches a glimpse of himself/herself in a mirror. My heart fills with joy each time I’m reminded at just how special pets can be to us.
Dogs have a way of getting into our hearts when we least expect it. As the owner of Starpups Depot, I’ve been able to learn so much from the vast research I’ve done and more importantly, from my clients. The stories I’ve heard and the lessons I’ve learned are priceless. I really enjoy seeing the deeper humane side of people.
I had a friend visiting recently who’s known my oldest dog, Lucy, since she was a puppy. He likes dogs but he’s not a dog person. While staying with me he fell in love with my youngest, Woobie. He truly had a love affair going on with her for the past three weeks. He moved into a new place a few days ago and yet another yellow lab greeted him. He told me tonight that he’s definitely going to get one “of those dogs” when he’s ready.
The owners of the donut shop next to my store just adopted a dog from the shelter. I knew they liked dogs but to realize that they were willing to search all over Los Angeles animal shelters to adopt instead of buying from a store or breeder gave me such comfort in knowing they are my neighbors.
These are just a couple of experiences that I hold dear to my heart. The compassion I hear day after day for animals is amazing. The lengths that rescue volunteers will go to in order to save one more life is astounding. The response I get to requests for help for abandoned animals gives me pride in what I’m doing with my life. As long as I’m able to use my business as a voice to reach out for aid, I will do so.
