When planning an adult birthday party there are a few things to keep in mind.  First you will need to consider who the birthday person would like to have in attendance.  Keep in mind that this means taking a big look at who the party is for and planning it accordingly.  If it’s for a grandparent will they want their grandchildren there regardless of age?  This will make for a more family-themed event.  If they are adults with no children, you will probably go for a totally different kind of event.  Always consider that some people love to be surprised while others will want to participate in the planning of their special day.

Keep your invitations fun but simple, remember to include the important stuff like the date, time, place as well as who you are honoring along with any themes or attire that is required to ensure all guest have a good time.  You can pick up invitations at many retail stores or create them yourself on any home computer.  I have even come across a few websites that offer one-stop-shopping for invitations, place settings and party favors as well as emailing the invitations to your guest list and tracking who’s attending and who’s declined.  Overall, it’s a pretty cool idea.

When it comes to picking a theme, again keep your guests in mind.  The best theme parties are when all in attendance participate.  Have casino, game board or even a movie theme. What about Mardi Gras, costume, toga, decade-specific like 50s or 70s or even your favorite sport.

Food and beverage choices take a good portion of your budget so make sure to account for the overall time a party will last.  Most guests will eat once they see others grabbing for plates, but I believe it is important to encourage your guests to eat, especially when alcohol is being served.  I also believe that buffets that seem endless will keep everyone happy.  Providing a broad buffet accounts for all taste buds.  Cut veggies, cheese and crackers, dip, deli meats, meatballs, salads and sandwiches make easy eating.  Always have all the fixings so your guests can make their own choices with condiments and although stepping away from potato chips may seem hard, the idea is to step it up for this special occasion.

Serving cake and desserts is my specialty so I always tell my clients to be realistic.  Though I do not like to admit this, not everyone likes sweets.  Planning for cake, I use this rule of thumb: Order enough for half of your guests in attendance, unless of course you want leftovers.  For reference’s sake a half sheet cake when cut properly can feed up to 40 guests.  I however like to encourage my clients to have a Dessert Bar, selecting several different individually sized pastries or confection items to appease even the pickiest palate.
