Since getting to sleep is such a common problem, there is much advice on the subject.  However, what works for someone else may not work for you.  People vary in their need for and satisfaction with sleep.  Most of us at some point or another have experienced difficulty with sleeping whether it’s waking up many times during the night, waking up early and not being able to get back to sleep, sleeping lightly, experiencing recurring night terrors and nightmares, or just simply overall poor sleep quality.  For some of us these time periods may be prolonged and can be associated with how we’re dealing with stress in our lives, what thoughts we’re taking to bed with us, how much or little we’re exercising, our eating habits, as well as our sleeping habits to name a few.

That’s right, our minds can create a habit with how we sleep.  When we begin to experience lack of sleep on a regular basis our thoughts can create a “here we go again” attitude forming a self-fulfilling prophecy.  We also begin to experience stress about sleeping wondering,  “Am I ever going to fall asleep?”  If our language and attitude toward sleep is poor can we truly expect the outcome to be any different?

Unbeknownst to most people, medications can also interfere with sleep patterns.  Those taking medicine for a particular issue may attribute sleep problems to the ailment, not the cure.

However, here are some medicine types that can adversely affect your sleep:

• Antidepressants

• Antihistamines

• Decongestants

• Sleeping pills

• Theophylline

• Weight loss medication

Whether your sleep problems are due to stress, inner-language, medications or habit, one way to change your quality of sleep immediately is hypnotherapy.  A natural side effect of hypnosis is experiencing deep sound sleep at night.  It happens because we are working with the subconscious mind, the part of your mind that is all about sleep; it is your dream world.

Understanding what is involved in getting to sleep will help you focus on the right things and make a habit of it.  Learning relaxation techniques, breathing techniques and mind techniques that are associated with inducing sleep will be tremendously helpful.  So, don’t deprive yourself another night and let’s turn this negative into a positive.
