You are experiencing pain in the sole of your foot.  Standing up for a period of time makes it hurt even more.  Just tapping on the sensitive area causes you pain.

You may be suffering from tarsal tunnel syndrome, a condition similar to carpal tunnel, which occurs in the wrist.  Unfortunately, failure to have the condition diagnosed and treated will allow the pain and problem to worsen.

The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space that lies on the inside of the ankle next to the ankle bones.  It is covered with a thick ligament that maintains and protects arteries, tendons, veins and nerves that are contained within the tunnel.  Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when one of these nerves, called the posterior tibial, is squeezed or compressed.  This compression can result in numbness in the area of the skin that the nerve would normally supply sensation to.  You may also experience a tingling or burning sensation, shooting pain or a feeling similar to an electrical shock.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, rest and provide ice to the painful and inflamed area.  Then see a podiatrist.  Your podiatrist will start with a complete history and physical examination.  The treatment chosen will be dependent upon what your podiatrist finds is contributing to the pressure on the nerve.  Anti-inflammatory medications and rest may initially control the symptoms.  If the condition is being aggravated by an abnormal position of the foot, orthotics may relieve the stretching of the nerve.  Cortisone injections, ultrasound and heat may also be applied.

Surgery will be recommended if conservative treatment is ineffective.  We perform such a surgery on an outpatient basis under a regional anesthetic.  Healing does take some time and crutches are required to ensure a complete recovery.

The longer you wait, the less likely conservative treatment will be effective.  Therefore, you should see your podiatrist immediately.
