This is his Success Story
My audiologist asked me to write a bit of a success story regarding my experience getting my first set of hearing devices. I feel extremely obligated to do so because of the great experience I received at Audiology Associates.
I am a 50 plus year-old guy who has worked outdoors and been around heavy equipment and loud noises my entire life, never wearing hearing protection until recently. For the last couple of years, I have moved into a job that requires me to be involved in more meetings in an office environment than ever before. I had begun to notice that I was missing out on parts of conversations. I would try to place myself at conference tables so that I could see the main speaker. It turns out I was getting pretty efficient at reading lips, and if someone else was speaking — I had real difficulty determining what was being said. My family compensated for my hearing loss by speaking louder, or when I would say, “Huh?” they would just say, “Oh, it’s not important.” It was important. I was missing out.
I had seen an article about Audiology Associates. I remember being impressed, so I looked them up, made the call for an appointment. First I received a hearing evaluation, while my wife watched and laughed as I made up words that I thought were being said to me. It turns out I really needed to see people talk to figure out the words. The audiologist made an uncomfortable fact of my life really fun and painless to accept.
It is truly amazing — there were sounds that I had not been hearing for apparently quite some time. Everyday I am hearing things that I don’t remember hearing before, and the greatest thing is — no more “huh?” I am now able to fully participate in conversations that previously I would have just tried to listen. Getting hearing devices has been the best thing I have done for myself.
The technology available put to rest my concern about looks. The devices I chose are Bluetooth compatible. My cell phone is paired to my hearing device, effectively creating a headset for driving. It is also paired to my I-Pod — no wires! Now I can sit in boring meetings and listen to music, and nobody knows! My GPS is paired to my hearing device. Anything Bluetooth compatible can go through the hearing device, and visibility — the visible portion of the device looks like a piece of mono-filament fishing line!
I am happy I made the decision to get better hearing, and thrilled to have met all of the people at Audiology Associates! Sincerely — Sam Martano.
