Brand names such as Botox® and Restylane® are well known for treating facial lines, but there is a lesser-known filler that is used for restoring deep facial fat loss — a condition referred to as “Lipoatrophy”. This filler is called Sculptra® and is another tool that can be utilized to obtain a more youthful appearance.
Lipoatrophy can lead to sunken cheeks, indentations and/or hollow eyes. Sculptra is injected below the surface of the skin to gradually increase its thickness after several treatments that might be spaced out over the course of two to three months. It uses a biocompatible and biodegradable material called “poly-L-lactic” that is broken down by the body, but has been shown to remain effective for up to two years after initial treatment.
The material utilized in Sculptra is not new and has been safely used in over 30 countries and is FDA approved in the United States. Poly-L-lactic has been used to correct mild to large volume loss in chins, cheeks and eye areas for many years.
As with all types of treatments, you should speak to your dermatologist to determine if Sculptra is right for you. Also, this procedure should only be performed by a fully trained provider who is familiar with pre-treatment and post-treatment requirements that can maximize results and minimize facial swelling that may occur afterwards.
