As an insurance agent, we’re too often saddened by client losses that could have been prevented.  For example, there are several concerns homeowners commonly neglect that can lead to fires and serious injury.  I would like to share some of the things that you can do to help prevent accidents and disasters in your home.
Kitchen
• Keep oven mitts and towels away from stove burners.
• Keep appliance cords away from the sink and stove. Unplug countertop appliances when they are not in use.
• Regularly check for small leaks in your plumbing (this applies to bathrooms and garages too).
• Always keep hot liquids out of your children’s reach.
• Make sure you have direct, even lighting where you slice or cut food.
• Avoid wearing loose, flowing clothing while cooking.
Bathrooms
• Use only non-skid mats in bathtubs and showers.
• Always watch young children when they are bathing.
• Make sure all medicine bottles have child-resistant caps.
• Use night lights in the bedrooms and hallways so you can see where you’re going if there is an emergency.
• Unplug all electrical appliances when they are not in use. Never use them near water.
Bedrooms
• Never smoke in bed.
• Never fold, tuck in or cover an electric blanket.
• Place smoke detectors near each bedroom and check them every six months to make sure they’re working.
• Keep sources of fire away from beds.
Other rooms and hallways
• Keep all hallways clear from obstructions.
• Post emergency numbers on or near each telephone.
• Tack down all small rugs and runners, or make sure they are slip resistant.
• Remove lint from the dryer after every use to prevent fire.
• Have your gas/oil company, or a trained professional, inspect your heating and gas appliances each year.

Next month, we will discuss twenty more actions you can take to make your home and family safer and more secure. If you have any questions regarding safety in your home, you are welcome to contact me.
