Moms and dads with cameras and looks of pride on their faces watched their daughters socializing with their friends.  Ladies showed off their newly applied make-up, fingernail polish and party dresses. Professional make-up artists complete with stools, mirrors, and an abundance of cosmetic supplies.  Excited chatter as complimentary bags of NYX make-up items were distributed. These were just a few of the sights as LETMESAIL’S Lifestyle Enrichment Center was transformed into a “backstage like” make-up studio on Saturday, February 9 prior to LETMESAIL’s 2nd Annual Cupid’s Ball.

This was not your usual make-up session because the recipients were ladies with various disabilities.  They are also clients of LETMESAIL, a rapidly growing organization that strives to provide social, recreational, and educational activities for teenagers and adults who are differently-abled.

It was an incredible sight watching this pre-Oscar like frenzy of activity, well orchestrated by LETMESAIL Board Member and volunteer Suzanne Vanvakaris, who kept each station running smoothly. Comments from Moms such as “My daughter is having the time of her life” or clients saying “Now that my make-up is on I can’t wait to dance!”; “Look at my beautiful nails! “; “Do you like my lip gloss?” ; and “This glitter makes me shine!” reverberated around the room. There were tender moments such as when several young women who are blind or use a wheelchair were gently helped into the limousine by the professional chauffeur. These were just some of the highlights I observed as I went around and chatted with LETMESAIL friends and families.

This special “makeover” transformation was made possible by Toni Ko, owner of NYX Cosmetics, who generously donated all of her supplies and services. Toni had many excellent make-up assistants helping her. One was Angelica and when I asked Angelica what it was like for her to be working with the clients she said that it was probably as much fun for her as it was for the ladies! The limo was donated by Ron Stein of Exclusive Limousine, and the driver was generously paid for by LETMESAIL supporters Don Zennie and Lorne Mattner.

LETMESAIL’s 2nd Annual Cupid’s Ball was well attended by over 75 clients and 57 volunteers from Washington Mutual Bank, Valencia High School ASB and ABY Club (A Better You), and numerous other LETMESAIL volunteers. Clients enjoyed playing games, arts and craft activities, refreshments, and of course dancing!
