Breast augmentation is one the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States.  Traditionally breast augmentation is performed though incision in fold under the breast or around the areola.  However with surgical advancement, it is possible to insert saline breast implants through an incision in the belly button.  This technique is commonly called Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA) or Belly Button Breast Augmentation.  This is an alternative technique employed to achieve the desired results of breast augmentation with several advantages and few disadvantages.
Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is performed by making an incision in the inner folds of the belly button.  A slender instrument is then guided under the skin from the navel area to the area behind the breast tissue or under the muscle.  Next, a pocket is created to place the implant within.  Once the size and location of the pocket is created an empty saline implant is placed into this pocket.  The implant is then filled with a sterile saline solution to the desired size.  The belly button incision is closed up with dissolvable stitches.

After the Transumbilical Breast Augmentation procedure is complete, the patient’s chest and abdomen is wrapped with pressure bandage. The next day the bandages are removed and the patent is allowed to shower.  The patient is discouraged from strenuous activity but can go back to work within two or three days following the procedure.

There are several advantages to Transumbilical Breast Augmentation.  The procedure itself takes only 30 to 45 minutes to perform.  The shorter anesthesia time decreases anesthesia-associated health risks and allows for quicker recovery.  The scarring after the procedure is minimal and virtually invisible.  Transumbilical Breast Augmentation is associated with less interruption of normal breast tissue and less risk of nerve damage in the area.  In fact, the majority of patients regain sensation faster as compared to other incisions. The incision is far away from the breast and therefore poses less risk of an infection that can spread from the incision to the breasts or the surroundings of the implant. There is virtually no bleeding incurred by the technique.  Recovery time for this procedure is relatively short.

There is no one procedure that fits all patients, but the more options the surgeon has in his repertoire the better they can tend to the patients’ personal needs and desires
