Every graduate of dental school is a general dentist, and many may claim to be cosmetic dentists as well.  What is the difference?  I get asked all of the time.  Although dental materials knowledge and extensive post graduate training is the most common answer, to me, it may best be answered by temperament.  The temperament and approach to dentistry of a true cosmetic dentist is what sets him or her apart from a general dentist.

A cosmetic dentist is passionate about the appearance of the work and getting it to be as beautiful as possible.  General dentists have a much lower expectation of beauty in dental work.

General dentists are trained to fix things.  Cosmetic dentists are trained to create things.  Not only does the cosmetic dentist pay attention to detail and function, but must also be acutely aware of beauty and have the creativity to develop it to its utmost.  It’s like the difference between a rough carpenter and a finish carpenter.

Cosmetic dentists are very attuned to the patient’s perception of the work.  General dentists are trained in school that they are the best judges as to what is best for the patient.  Cosmetic dentistry is the art of addressing the self-perception of the patient and then having the burning desire and exceptional skill to meet or exceed the patient’s perception.  The cosmetic dentist knows that if the patient is not pleased with the results, regardless of function, that the case is a failure.

The concept of smile design is an artistic subject that general dentists, just as a matter of personality, have difficulty with.  Cosmetic dentists learn this art, the elements of beauty in a face and in the shapes, colors, and alignment of the teeth.  It takes more than attending lectures to learn the many aspects of color that a cosmetic dentist needs to know.  Hands on training in shapes and colors are mandatory for success.  The intricacies of this art take considerable time, training and experience to master.

Finally, it boils down to the art of communication.  Communication is important between the patient and the cosmetic dentist, the cosmetic dentist and a highly trained and skilled dental lab and vice versa.  If a patient is not satisfied, then the dentist has to determine what to do to create that satisfaction.  It is a different level of communication, and one that takes major commitment and expertise to attain.
