Diarrhea is defined by increasing bowel movement, two to three times a day. There are acute and chronic diarrheas. Acute diarrhea is usually 90 percent self-limited and lasts less than three weeks. Treatment may include re-hydration and use of anti-diarrhea agents. Chronic diarrhea is more complicated. The causes of chronic diarrhea may be grouped into seven major pathophysiologic categories: osmotic diarrhea; secretory diarrhea; inflammatory conditions; malabsorption syndromes; motility disorders and chronic infections. Anti-diarrhea agents are used for treatment.
On Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the causes of diarrhea relate to outside pathogens such as attacking by cold, damp and heat, food poisoning and/or inside body imbalance which relates to liver (related to emotions, stress), stomach, spleen and kidney.
Use acupuncture and herbs to treat diarrhea. Acupuncturist will be recording the cause of diarrhea to give patient individualized treatment. If the cause of diarrhea is an outside pathogen, she/he will use method to expel it from the body. If the cause of diarrhea is an imbalance of the body, she/he will balance the body to improve or eliminate the symptoms and strengthen the body.
