Summer is approaching quickly and with it comes better weather and increased activity.  This increased activity can often lead to pain and injury.  One of the common problems with increased activity is tendonitis.  Tendons themselves are cords of tough, fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to bones.  Tendonitis is the inflammation and irritation of these tendons.  If the normal smooth gliding motion of a tendon is impaired, the tendon will become inflamed and movement will become painful.  Tendonitis, if it’s caught early, can be easily treated and cured.  This is a condition that we treat in our office daily.

The most common cause of tendonitis is overuse.  Commonly, individuals begin an exercise program, or increase their level of exercise, and begin to experience symptoms of tendonitis.  The tendon is unaccustomed to the new level of demand, and this overuse will cause inflammation and tendonitis.  To avoid tendonitis you should take it slow at first.  Gradually build up your activity level.

So, you have been diagnosed with tendonitis or fear you might develop it, and it is time to look at treatments.  Initially you should avoid activities that aggravate the problem and rest the injured area.  Adding ice to the area to reduce inflammation as well as taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can also help initially.  Exercise will help to strengthen the injured area, reducing future risk of flare up.  Exercise should start once symptoms have been reduced.

If the condition does not improve in a week, see your doctor.  You may need more advanced treatments, such as:

• Ultrasound therapy and electrical stimulation to reduce swelling, fluid build up, and pain
• Myofacial release/massage therapy to decrease scar tissue and increase flexibility
• Chiropractic adjustments to improve range of motion
• Physical therapy and exercise to strengthen the injured area
• Wearing splints or wraps to immobilize the joint and reduce repetitive trauma
• Cortisone injection to treat the inflammation

Your doctor of chiropractic is experienced in determining the cause of your pain.  An in-depth examination will be conducted and further diagnostics may be required to determine the cause of your condition.  You should have your condition checked today.  Chiropractic is an excellent resource for creating a care plan to help you throughout the healing process.
