We have all heard the terms: alignment, spine angle, posture, etc… These terms are not only important in regard to the outcome of your golf shot, but also to the health of your spine.
There are three fundamental causes of golf injuries particularly of the lower back: poor posture, lack of flexibility and poor swing mechanics.
Sound golf posture is not only important at address but also throughout the swing. The ability to maintain sound posture during the golf swing is a measure of a golfer’s dynamic postural strength and fitness. However, postural fitness is often compromised by physical restriction or biomechanical dysfunction, thus leading to poor swing mechanics. In other words, if a golfer has joint restrictions, tight muscles and poor flexibility he/she is at risk for poor performance and injury every time a swing is taken.
In order to drive the ball 250 yards the golfer’s swing dynamics require 60 pounds per foot of torque. The typical amateur golfer can swing a golf club 90 miles an hour. So, with these numbers in mind, when a swing is taken out of position or out of balance, there is tremendous strain on the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. When the force applied to these tissues exceeds their resistance, they will be injured. A golf swing requires a healthy spine!
The proper golf swing requires that all segments of the spine move freely and harmoniously with the rest of the body. Most golfers are not free from spinal restriction and will therefore have low back pain sooner or later.
The best way to maintain postural fitness is to restore joint mobility, alignment and flexibility. Chiropractors have the best procedures that will restore joint mobility and alignment. This will allow the muscles to function properly and proper stretching routines can be done safely. It is no secret that the most elite athletes in the world utilize chiropractors to improve performance, including Tiger Woods.
