A field of 82 golfers turned out for the recent SCV Zonta Golf Tournament at Robinson Ranch, raising funds to support Zonta’s local and international service projects in support of women.
Using a “best ball” format, the team including John Heys, Chris Chase, Phil Baron and Doug Schiermeyer pooled their talents to win the Best Men’s Team plaques. Best Women’s Team honors went to Sue Malone, Tammy Becker, Bonnie Gowing and Mel Johnson.
The Honesty Award went to the highest scoring team, consisting of Amira and Tony Mendias and Martin and Jodi Blaha. Medals also went to the Special Olympics team: Alan Quantal, Jeffery Krinkel and Danny Barton.
The day’s activities also included a $100,000 cash shootout on the 18th hole for purchasers of Super Tickets whose tickets were selected in a random drawing. Trying for a hole-in-one with a big cash incentive were Gerri McCorkle, Elier Morejon and Darleen Conner.
The awards banquet which wrapped up the tournament included prize drawings for gift certificates and themed baskets, and a mini silent auction. Richard Herron was top bidder for a week in a beach house on Maui donated by the Modugno family.
Title sponsor for this year’s event was Mehta & Mann. The firm’s principal, Michele Mann, is a former Z Club member who also is a prospective member of the Zonta Club of SCV. Eagle sponsors include The Magazine of Santa Clarita, Glendora Chevrolet, Union Bank of California and Inside SCV.
Birdie Sponsors are Newhall Valencia Mini Storage, Norm Marshall & Associates, SouthWest Dealer Services, Nite-Lite Signs, Walzer & Melcher LLP and JMI Steel.
The tournament is one of Zonta’s major local fund-raisers, supporting such activities as the Healthy Kids Club for underprivileged girls in Val Verde, Healthy Woman’s Day free health screening for uninsured and underinsured women, Virginia Wrage Memorial Grants for mature women facing a mid-life change, and community grants to local non-profit organizations which share Zonta’s goals of improving the status of women. Co-chairs for this year’s tournament were Adele Macpherson and Cindy Kittle.
