On Saturday, August 30, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will host the Fun In the Sun Chili Cook-Off, which will take place at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic.  The event, which is scheduled from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., is expected to draw thousands of area residents.  Proceeds will go to a great cause and will benefit the Special Olympics- Santa Clarita, as well as the Heads-Up Therapy on Horseback for disabled children.

One of the largest summer weekend events in the Santa Clarita Valley, the chili cook-off was first sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department 24 years ago and has grown to include dozens of sponsors and vendors.  This year, participants will enjoy live bands, an antique car display, equine demonstrations, military displays and an exciting Texas Hold’em event.

Additionally, there will be games for all ages, and of course, plentiful chili and other delicious delicacies. “People are looking to go out and have fun on Labor Day weekend, but with the price of gas so high, they are looking to stay local.  The cook-off is a perfect place to spend the day because there’s something for everyone! I am looking forward to the horse competition in the arena area, sponsored by Heads Up Therapy.  It’s not every day a city boy like me gets a taste of the rodeo!” stated Deputy Burdick.

In addition to the dozens of chili booths provided, the Cowboy Cantina Steakhouse and Barbecue will be providing food from their delectable western-style menu at reasonable prices.  Vendors will also be providing various refreshments, and adult beverages will be available for those who provide appropriate proof of age.

Fun In the Sun Chili Cook-Off “chili cards” will also be sold the day of the event for $5 each, which allows you to taste the various chili event entries.  You won’t want to miss this exciting event.

The Jack Bones Equestrian Center is accessible via the Parker Road exit off the northbound Interstate 5 to Castaic Road south.  Continue two miles to Tapia Canyon Road east, and follow the signs to the event.  Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are still available.
