Let’s talk about nutrition, more specifically supplements. You hear about them everyday. You all have neighbors who have tried to sell you the latest multilevel marketing supplement, drink, shake or concoction, but do they work? Who are you getting your nutritional advice from? Why would you get your advice from a friend or neighbor? Where did they get their education on nutrition and vitamins? How about the teenager working at the local vitamin store? How much knowledge could he or she have? What about your family practitioner? Well, unfortunately, most medical schools do not teach much nutrition, so unless he or she has learned it through seminars, the usual answer is a vague “Yes, you should take vitamins, get a good multivitamin and take it.” Most people get their nutritional advice from someone who is not remotely qualified to give it. Do the supplements work? Well the answer is most do something, but is it what you bought it for? There is an old adage “taking some supplements is better than nothing,” and that is true to a point. You have to decide if you are taking the supplement for better health or for a specific problem.
As for what to buy, I tell my patients that vitamins are like electronics, you can spend $50 on a stereo or $5,000 on a stereo, they will both play music, but there will be a difference in the sound. It is the same with vitamins, usually there is a reason a certain brand is very inexpensive. The more costly products usually are designed specifically for better absorption. The point of this article is that you will only know by talking to the proper specialist and experts. Nutrition and supplements have been part of my practice for most of my 18 years in practice. Most people should be on a good organic multivitamin and mineral supplement along with essential fatty acids, ie, a good omega 3, and an antioxidant. That would qualify for the “basic nutritional supplements”, and most people will feel better taking them. There can be specific herbs and vitamins used for enhancing your immune system, for arthritis and inflammation, as well as stress and detoxification.
