Have you ever wondered what it would take to become a foster parent?  Fostering is a wonderful experience but many people don’t know how to get started.  Here is an abridged list of what is required for foster parent certification.

1. Fingerprint clearance (A thorough background check)

2. DMV printout (Record of your driving history for the past three years)

3. Community First Aid and Infant, Child, and Adult CPR

4. Proof of auto and home/renters insurance.  All cars must have the minimum liability required by law and homeowner’s or renter’s Insurance must have coverage for $300,000 liability

5. Physical exam and TB Test

6. Completion of foster parent and adoption training modules

7. Community water safety certification

8. Three personal references for each Foster Parent

9. Foster parents must have at least two babysitters who have fingerprint clearances and are CPR/FA certified

10. Completion of a Home Study with full interview on current family and childhood experiences

11. Employment verification and financial statement to show you have the ability to support your family outside foster care funds

12. Adherence to state licensing regulations:

• A-B-C Fire Extinguisher mounted in the home, smoke detectors in each bedroom and one in the hallway

• First Aid Kit

• Earthquake Kit

• Items that pose a risk to children must be properly secured under “tot locks” or lock and key.

• All pools must be fenced and spa covers must be lockable.
