Toenails withstand the brunt of your daily activities. Your feet must endure walking, running, wearing shoes, and so many other activities. Thus, your daily lifestyle may eventually cause problems with your toenails; including ingrown nails, fungal infections and hematomas (blood beneath the toenail).
Ingrown toenails occur when the toenail grows into the skin. This causes pain, inflammation and/or infection. Ignoring an ingrown nail may cause abnormal skin to form around the nail. This can lead to recurring infections. Podiatrists treat ingrown nails by removing a portion of the damaging nail. In more severe cases, the entire nail must be removed. To prevent the ingrown nail from returning, podiatrists use a laser procedure. It is necessary to have your Podiatrist treat them because of the problems they create.
Improperly ventilated footwear is the cause of fungal infections. In these cases, fungus collects under the toenail and builds up under the skin. This results in pain. Sometimes the fungus may cause the nail to thicken and become yellow or brownish. As the fungus grows, foul-smelling, moist debris can be seen.
Generally, the fungal infections can be treated with over-the-counter medication. For more severe cases, your podiatrist can remedy the problem with prescription medications, filing, or removing the nail.
A hematoma is the result of an active lifestyle where toes are repeatedly rubbing against the shoe. The toe becomes aggravated and blood gets beneath the nail. If the hematoma is treated within the first few hours of forming, your podiatrist can release the blood and relieve the pain. After several days, however, the toenail may have to be removed. Therefore, it is imperative for you to visit your podiatrist immediately when you first notice a hematoma.
