School is back and we are so happy to report that plans for two new Octagon clubs are in the works at Canyon High School and Valencia High School.  By the time this article reaches your home next month both clubs should have been chartered and the members ready to meet the needs of the youth in our community along with our club their sponsor.  We wish them good luck and will report their progress back to you in the up and coming months.

Our club has had the wonderful fortune to have picked-up new members in the last few weeks and we welcome them all to our club and our Optimist family.  Without the influx of new members, as well as our existing members we would cease to be, so thank you all for your support for years past and for the years to come.

As reported in the last issue, the Samuel Dixon Rubber Duck Regatta will be taking place on October 18, and we do need your support.  You can help by adopting a “rubber duck” for only $5.  Adoption of these ducks can be done through our club as well as several other agencies in our community.  Information regarding this can be obtained through our website: www.scv-optimist.org or you can call for additional information at 661-252-7313.

The theme for the 2008-2009 essay contest is: “The Power of Youth” and is open to all High School students under the age of 19 before December 31, 2008.  First prize on the International level is $6,000 scholarship and there are three levels to the competition, starting with club, district and International.  Another scholarship offered is $1,500 for the annual Oratorical contest and this is open to middle school students who have not reached the age of 16 prior to December 31, 2008 and that theme is: “For Me Optimism Is.”  This contest is conducted on four levels, club, zone, area and district.  For information regarding both of these scholarships please go to our website.

Because of space it is very difficult to inform you of all that is happening, and what we have in store for our club and the community, which we serve.  So please consult our web page for additional information or call 661-252-7313.
Until next month.
