Do you think that having back pain is a normal part of life? The fact is that those aches and pains may be warning signs that your back is wearing out, or degenerating, prematurely. Everyday your spine has to handle the stresses you put on it. Whether your job requires repetitive bending, lifting or twisting, or doing things as simple as getting into your car or caring for your baby, your spine has to support your upper body and help you move. These activities produce repeated micro (tiny) traumas to your spine and its supporting structures, contributing to spinal degeneration.
Some of the more common microtraumas we commonly see are: Holding your head
to one side to cradle a phone. Slouching when reading or writing. Not bending the knees when lifting. Twisting while in the process of lifting. And believe it or not, sleeping on your stomach or on a poor mattress or couch can be a contributor to spinal degeneration. Combining the more common everyday microtraumas with the more “major” traumas
like previous falls or sports injuries, auto accidents, whiplash or being knocked unconscious can cause even more early degeneration.
As your spine degenerates, your discs will start to lose their fluid, causing them to decrease in size. This puts more stress on the joints and ligaments around your spine causing them to be less elastic and causing small spurs to form around the joints. This will ultimately cause pain. The degenerative process can go on for years before the pain is felt. Come into BKP and let us examine your spine, early degeneration can be detected and the process slowed. Don’t let your spine age before you do!
