There are a lot of myths about aging, three of which are the worst because they can keep us from aging successfully.
Myth One: To be old is to be sick. OK, the risk of developing a chronic illness or disability is higher as we age, but despite limitations, most seniors are able to adapt and to live independently for a very long time.
Myth Two: You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. That’s silly. The brain doesn’t deteriorate as we age, in fact it retains a high degree of what’s called neuroplasticity, which is the ability to learn new things, even in advanced age.
Myth Three: It’s too late for positive action. In fact, it’s never too late. Adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors can pay off, no matter what your age.
That means starting today, and into the new year, you can stop simply growing old and start aging well – with wisdom. Here are some suggestions to get – and keep you going:
Resolution One: Start walking and moving – exercise is everything! Use very light weights or even a soup can to exercise your arms and build your upper body strength. Stretch and move your legs and feet for increased lower body strength and improved flexibility. If you don’t know what to do, ask your doctor for some simple Range of Motion exercises to help keep your body healthy.
Resolution Two: Keep your attitude positive. Focus on what you have now, not what you’ve lost, in regard to friends, health, whatever. Keep your brain active with reading and music. If your eyesight is fading, contact the National Braille Library Services in Los Angeles, 323-660-3880, and ask for their free talking books.
If vision isn’t a problem, meet new people and learn something new by taking a class, work on puzzles, or start a journal – you might be surprised how many people would be interested in knowing more about your life and experiences.
Resolution Three: Don’t let chronic health issues keep you from enjoying your senior years. Be proactive in working with your doctors to make sure you’re getting the information and the medications you need to help you age successfully.
