Remember that corals are the stars of a nano reef aquariums, but live rock sets the stage for dramatic displays. Start by arranging the live rock in visually interesting layouts. Not just conventional layouts but make sure that all the live rock is piled towards the back of the aquarium. Center all of it or design a U-shape, a chasm, or cove for your live rock layout. Whatever you decide on, begin by determining the amount of usable space you have in your aquarium. In many situations, the shape of the live rock arrangement is determined by the amount of usable space. Make sure your nano tank comes with at least two pumps.
It is recommended that one-and-a-half to two-pounds of live rock is added for each aquarium gallon of water. It may be a good idea to lean towards the low end of this range. It takes into account future stocking levels, since new coral additions will often include aragonite plugs or live rock. Even though live rock is essential, you want to make it look pretty. Polyp corals, mushroom corals and soft corals are well suited for nano reef aquariums; they are easy to care and are available in a variety of colors, Select corals that create striking color combinations. Imagine a stunning display of electric blue, turquoise, orange or yellow colors. The graceful and feathery tentacles of Glove or Starburst polyps come alive when paired with the geometric colonies of Moon polyps.
