Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has formed a partnership with the prestigious UCLA Department of Radiation Oncology to further advance treatment at Providence cancer centers in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.
Starting in May, UCLA’s radiation oncologists will bring their cutting-edge radiation therapy program to Providence Holy Cross patients. The new partnership will build on relationships UCLA has created in the communities served by Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.
“As a fellow member of the UCLA faculty, we are honored to work with the tremendous team at UCLA to enhance our services here at Providence Holy Cross,” said Shamel Sanani, M.D., chief of staff at Providence Holy Cross and medical director of cancer services. “This new collaboration will bring new, state-of-the-art technologies and protocols to ensure the best possible care for our patients.”
Until May, Providence will continue its partnership with Valley Radiotherapy Associates. There will be no disruption during this transition for patients currently undergoing radiation therapy. Helen Chen, a well-respected radiation oncologist who is a familiar face among patients at Providence Holy Cross, has accepted a position as associate clinical professor at UCLA and will continue practicing at the cancer center.
Providence Holy Cross Cancer Centers’ five-year survival rates for patients treated for various cancers surpass national averages. The centers’ teams include board-certified radiation oncologists, highly trained radiation therapists and oncology nurses, rehabilitation therapists, nutritionists, social workers and spiritual care providers. The new agreement will open the advanced-protocols and clinical trials developed by UCLA’s renowned academic medical center to Providence Holy Cross patients.
The UCLA Department of Radiation Oncology’s patient care team leaders include innovative physicians, medical physicists and research scientists. For decades, radiation researchers at UCLA have had a pre-eminent international reputation in advancing the understanding of the natural biology of the cancer and its cure by radiation therapy.
For more than 45 years, the doctors, nurses and staff of Providence Holy Cross have been recognized for their commitment to excellent patient care. In 2008, Providence Holy Cross was the first community hospital in Los Angeles County to receive Magnet Status for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). HealthGrades, the leading health-care ratings organization, has recognized Providence Holy Cross for the past four years among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall clinical performance.
