When it comes to hanging art, it’s been said, “Where there’s a wall, there’s a way.” This especially rings true in tricky spaces like stairwells. With limited and awkward space, this section of the home isn’t as easy to decorate as a living room or bedroom. But, that’s not to say it can’t be done, and done nicely.
Before attempting the hanging feat, know that a stairwell comes with a different set of rules. Some designers recommend against hanging large, framed art because it might steal attention from surrounding architectural features. So, the question becomes, what type of art and framing works best? A common answer: Art that’s narrow or smaller in scale and slender frames.
As far as presentation, there are all kinds of possibilities, depending on what kind of effect you’re going for. Tight groupings of an even number of small, framed pieces of art or mirrors, for instance, can provide a window effect and enlarge the space. Hanging an odd number of pictures in a horizontal line brings a sense of balance and space.
