The minimally invasive facelift although not a new procedure, was originally described in 1919 by the French Surgeon Raymond Passo. This procedure is a popular alternative to the traditional approach. The Mini Facelift for the right candidate can achieve a dramatic result with less downtime.
After a thorough evaluation, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon can easily assess who is a candidate for a Mini Facelift. Some patients with increased extensive facial aging simply require a more comprehensive approach. The Mini Facelift corrects mild to moderate mid-face aging. It is ideal for patients who do not have extensive folds of skin or loose underlying neck muscles that hang from under the chin. Structurally the underlying SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is still addressed in a Mini Facelift to contour the jowl area, jaw line and lessen the nasolabial folds.
Individuals who make the best candidates are in their fourth or fifth decades and wish mild to moderate changes to improve their appearance. Usually the Mini Facelift involves much less work in the neck and limited muscle intervention. Patients with more advanced aging are not candidates for this less invasive approach as the results would be less dramatic and short lasting. Mini Facelifts are also utilized to rejuvenate individuals who have previously undergone a standard facelift.
Educating and informing patients is very rewarding to me as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon; realistic rejuvenated results are achieved. A plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has completed sub specialized training in aesthetic surgery possesses an aesthetic domain of expertise allowing the most favorable outcome.
