The Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center (LACRC), a program of the USC Davis School of Gerontology, is a nonprofit organization funded in part by the California Department of Mental Health. LACRC is part of a statewide system of resource centers serving family caregivers. Our mission is to “help families and communities master the challenges of caring for persons with brain impairing conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, MS, ALS, Parkinson’s and traumatic brain injury.” LACRC serves the entire L.A. County and have offices in Alhambra, Lancaster and in Los Angeles at USC.
Often family members and others identify as a spouse, adult child or friend, but not as a “caregiver.” A caregiver is someone who cares for and gives support to a family member, friend, or neighbor who is frail, ill, or disabled. The person receiving care can reside at home or in a care facility. Family caregivers usually are not aware of the services that exist in their community, and don’t know who to call in a time of need. LACRC is a “one-stop shop” service provider tailored to fit the many and varied needs of caregivers. LACRC offers a wealth of services, resources and support for caregivers including classes, support groups, counseling, retreats, trainings, family consultations, conferences, educational materials, respite, long-term care planning and more. LACRC provides presentations throughout the county on a range of caregiver issues in English, Spanish and Chinese.
It is critical to know and use the resources available in order to make good decisions and find support during challenging times. LACRC is a leader and model of caregiver services and is committed to a standard of excellence on behalf of family caregivers.
“There are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers… and those who will need caregivers.” – Rosalynn Carter
