Did you know that your skin is your largest organ, weighing between 9 and 11 pounds! Your skin is a barrier between the inside of your body and the outside world and how your skin ages depends on a variety of factors – your lifestyle, diet, heredity, exposure to the sun and other personal habits.
As your skin ages, it becomes thinner and it loses fat, so it appears less plump and smooth. Veins and bones become more prominent and we bruise easier. Wrinkles are the most visible sign of aging and form when the skin loses its flexibility. The breakdown of the elastic fibers in the skin causes it to lose its ability to snap back after stretching and as a result, wrinkles form. Smoking can also lead to wrinkles. Dry and flaking skin can also become an issue with aging due to the loss of oil glands. Age spots and, more seriously, skin cancer are caused by sun exposure.
There are some very easy tips to help keep your skin healthy and younger looking. Always use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more when outdoors. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Use moisturizers to hydrate and soothe your skin. Use warm water, not hot, when bathing and be sure to use a mild soap. Be sure to check with your doctor if you notice any skin sores or irritation.
