After years of anticipation, Golden Valley and West Ranch high schools can finally look forward to the day when they will be able to take advantage of their new state-of-the-art performing arts centers.
The Governing Board recently approved a $3.5 million contract for the completion of performing arts auditoriums at both Golden Valley and West Ranch. This action follows months of design engineering that involved not only architects, but sound and lighting consultants who collaborated in completing a project design that features state-of-the-art technologies. School staff also contributed to the conceptual design that includes provisions for performing groups including theater arts, dance and music.
The auditoriums at both schools were only partially completed when the schools were built because tight restrictions on State construction money did not allow for the auditorium interior improvements. The district elected to construct the auditorium buildings and leave the interior improvements until later when the district could pay for these features. Those interior improvements include seating, wall and floor finishes, stage rigging, lighting and sound enhancement. Since then, the district has successfully applied for Proposition 1D State Career Technical Education funding of $1.5 million and has been able to augment that with local Measure V General Obligation Bond funds.
Both auditoriums when completed will provide seating for 600 people. Sound engineers have designed special sound enhancement features that will provide excellent acoustical qualities. The stage rigging systems are similar to those found in professional theater venues and the lighting systems will provide maximum flexibility and the highest quality.
In addition to providing a venue for students studying the performing arts, these two facilities will be used as instructional areas for students interested in developing skills in sound and lighting for the entertainment industry.
The district’s performing arts centers and multipurpose rooms are often used by neighboring schools and by community groups looking for performance venues. The two new auditoriums will be a welcome addition to the community’s performance facilities. They will also provide a hands-on learning opportunity for students interested in careers in Southern California’s important entertainment industry — either on stage or behind the scenes.
Both projects are expected to be completed in late September or early October 2009.
