The caring, commitment, and compassion provided by Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s nursing teams was the focus of the hospital’s yearly National Nurses Day celebration on Tuesday, May 12.
Celebrated each year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, Henry Mayo’s nursing teams were treated to a day of gifts, prizes and special recognition. Balloons and posters decorated the hospital units and a banner promoting their attributes hung outside the hospital.
“Our nursing teams are the backbone of our ability to provide excellent patient care,” commented Roger Seaver, President and CEO at Henry Mayo. “We’re delighted to recognize their efforts and dedication to maintaining the health of our patients and saving lives.”
The day’s celebrations kicked off with continental breakfast being delivered to the nursing units. A catered luncheon was served by hospital administrators and physicians, and the evening shifts munched away on pizza. Throughout the day, nurses were delighted to receive “Candy Grams,” lollipops attached to recognition cards which their peers purchased and signed with compliments and thanks.
“We are extremely proud of our dedicated nursing team of professionals who, in partnership with our medical staff, other clinical disciplines and support staff, make a tremendous difference towards improving the health status of our community,” said Larry Kidd, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.
National Nurse’s Day began as a way to honor nurses who dedicate themselves to caring for others. Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths, and passions.
Henry Mayo’s nursing teams include close to 700 patient care staff members, with specialties ranging from emergency care to behavioral health to surgical services, and much more. They provide quality care for patients with many different types of illness and injuries and serve all of them with compassion and with a strong commitment to patient safety.
