Urogynecology Subspecialist Now Available at Multiple Locations
According to the federal government, an approximate 15 million Americans have a health problem that most don’t want to talk about. That problem is urinary incontinence.
“Many myths exist about this problem, preventing people from seeking help” and “Contrary to popular belief, loss of bladder control are not a normal part of aging or motherhood,” Dr. Bonni explains.
“Women suffer from this condition four times more often than men. They can and should ask the question whether there is an answer that works for them.”
The cornerstone of treatment is proper diagnosis. “Patients had been going to different doctor specialists depending on whose area of the pelvis the specialty had focused on — gynecology for the female external and internal genitalia, urology for the bladder and urethra and gastroenterology for bowel problems – creating a difficult situation when there are problems (as there usually is) affecting more than one area. After proper evaluation and diagnosis, surgery should be done by doctors experienced in reconstructive pelvic surgery. This is best done under the care of a fellowship trained Urogynecologist and Pelvic Surgeon.
For most women with urinary leakage brought on by physical activity, there is a “sling” device, which can be surgically placed beneath the urethra for support. This sling, when properly placed can provide almost immediate control of urinary leakage. There may be other reconstructive issues that may need attention in the same sitting.
Patients with laxity or drop of their pelvic floor may need elevation and tightening of their pelvic floor. “Overall the surgical aspects of the available treatments have shifted towards an outpatient setting with quicker recoveries… yet better results,” Dr. Bonni tells us. Patients now have access to all they need under one roof and in multiple locations.
